AUTUMN EQUINOX REVISITED

woodland photograph, unknown

“Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year. The morning of the first September was crisp and golden as an apple...”

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

After the unusually sultry weeks this summer the Autumn arrived on swift bright coloured wings. It is not unwelcome, although I enjoy all of them, this is my favourite season. It appeals to my quiet and slightly melancholy soul. It's a time for reflection, for parting, and for preparing. Time to remember and to celebrate the year as it pauses - and then passes into Winter.

Autumn Sprite by Margaret Tarrant

The Autumn Equinox is upon us. The woods are crisp underfoot, above the Crow calls. I love taking long walks alone save for all the wild things.

The ancients celebrated the season and gave them much more importance than we modern folk do. I believe that when we are more in tune with nature the tides of life become easier and we appreciate simple things which give us joy and comfort. I like collecting and displaying seasonal items of jewellery, china and textiles to remind me of moments in time.

Found items are also a rich source of inspiration and mood.

These are a few of my favourite Autumn images and items. If you look closely the Autumn palette is not limited to rust and golden hues but is also jewel bright and deeply rich with blues, amethyst, raspberry, mauve and greens.

  2. Autumn always comes slowly here ... the *cool* down will arrive late in October. But the light is changing and the trees are *talking* more in the breeze. I always enjoy your beautiful posts -- the lovely art work and this time, the Paragon teacup! xx

  4. Hurray for Autumn, such a richly coloured season! Love your Autumnal touches inside the house...beautiful. I too collect pieces from nature and just put them down so that I can pass by and touch them...especially pebbles and pieces of driftwood...enjoy your solitary walks. Sharon x

  10. My favorite season of the year is Autumn. I am much more in tune with nature at this time of year. I love to walk the beach when it is cooler and quieter and the crowds are gone. I love watching the sun illuminate the trees with slanted rays, it's breathtaking.

  11. Autumn seems a little late this year as it has been mild, so far. As you know, autumn is my favourite season too!
The trees in the garden are now changing colour with just a few golden leaves. I love the Tarrent illustration you have shown and thank you for the pretty Tarrent card, it arrived today!
I love the masks in the first picture, I will have to get the fox mask out and do an autumn gig in the garden. ;-D
    Autumn blessings and best wishes,
    Jo. x

  14. Exactly why I love Autumn too, the reflecting and saying goodbye to one season & hello to a new. Especially love the Margaret Tarrant image above, I hadn't come across her work before, thank you.

  15. These are all nice pictures, but I like the Paragon "Autumn fruit" the best. Some of those Paragon tea services are just wonderful.
